Fun fact. The Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva has five centuries of horological heritage on display. They also display some of the decorative arts traditionally associated with watchmaking.

THE MAIN THING

THE SEAMASTER RAILMASTER COLLECTION

A more affordable and attainable competitor to the Explorer

The Omega Railmaster. It's iconic, but not as recognized as the Rolex Explorer. For less money, you can walk into a store and leave with this watch. The Railmaster was created for railway workers. The watch needed to be highly anti-magnetic.

Shame on me. I totally forgot about this watch. A reader reached out and reminded me that this gem exists. I felt like a dumbo. So I promised him that I'd feature it in my next Explorer article.

Let's get controversial. The Railmaster is a better watch. Depending on what you're doing with it. (always need this fine print in there)

With the Railmaster, here's where you're better than the Explorer:

  • 150 meters of water resistance (+50 from Explorer)

  • Anti-magnetic to 15k gauss (Not advertised on Explorer)

  • Different color options

There are some places where the Explorer is better. The power reserve on the Explorer is 70 hours, vs 50 hours. People are more likely to recognize that you're wearing a Rolex vs an Omega. And that's it. Most other things are pretty close to equal.

Summary

Don't play the Rolex waitlist game. If you want a watch to wear everywhere, consider the Railmaster. It's durable, accurate, and goes with any outfit. Sure, maybe it's not associated with Mount Everest, but railroads paved the way to the US that we know now. Own This Watch.

I was interested in watches. But I was lost. I couldn't find one place with all the info I needed to make an informed purchase. So I went on a mission.

I wrote Watch Collecting 101 to be a one-stop shop for you. It has everything you need to know when you're starting out.

Small government, big watches. Be more like Ron Swanson.

Ron Swanson from the show Parks and Recreation. We know Ron for his mustache and despise of big (or any) government. But did you know that he wears a watch?

It makes sense, he threw his desktop computer in the trash. Did you really think he'd wear an Apple Watch? Hell no. Ron wears the Citizen AV0031-59A Eco-Drive Calibre 2100.

Here are some specs on Ron's watch:

  • Case Width: 44 mm

  • Movement: Eco-Drive

  • Crystal: Mineral Crystal

  • Water Resistance: 200 meter

  • Complications: Alarm, power reserve indicator, date, chronograph

This watch can take a beating and make it through a woodworking session. And it also is nice enough to wear to Mulligans for a nice porterhouse.

Summary

Just as this country was founded, the Eco-Drive eliminates the dependence on power. Light keeps the watch powered so there's no need for battery changes.

The Citizen AV0031-59A Eco-Drive Calibre 2100. Tough and practical. Just like Ron.
