The Rising Demand for Whiskey: A Smart Investor’s Choice
Why are 250,000 Vinovest customers investing in whiskey?
In a word - consumption.
Global alcohol consumption is on the rise, with projections hitting new peaks by 2028. Whiskey, in particular, is experiencing significant growth, with the number of US craft distilleries quadrupling in the past decade. Younger generations are moving from beer to cocktails, boosting whiskey's popularity.
That’s not all.
Whiskey's tangible nature, market resilience, and Vinovest’s strategic approach make whiskey a smart addition to any diversified portfolio.
The Main Thing
Skip The Moonwatch
The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional. AKA, the Moonwatch. It's iconic in the watch world. It has a catchy name and a badass history, but it's not for me.
With the white-dial version recently released, I was tempted. I'll admit, it looks good. But it's not for me.
Today, I'll give you my three reasons why I will not spend the money ($7,000 USD) on a new Moonwatch.
Water Resistance (Or Lack Thereof)
To be blunt, it sucks. It's 50 meters. With that rating, it's considered "splashproof." You can't (shouldn't) submerge the thing in any amount of water. No showers, shaving, or even vigorous hand-washing.
"But Ian, couldn't you just take off the watch when you do those things?"
No.
I cannot and will not. (I feel like “Sam I am” should be here)
My brain does not work that way. I cannot constantly be cautious to moisture. I live in an environment where there's a lot of snow and I never know when work will take me outside. My watches need to be "set and forget." No worries and no babysitting.
If this watch ever hits the 100-meter rating, maybe I'll reconsider.
It's a Chronograph
You may be thinking, "No shit, Ian. The chronograph thing is kinda the whole point." And yeah, I know it is. But I don't want it.
If you've been a subscriber since the beginning, you know a few things about me. When it comes to my watches, they need to be practical. I buy a watch because each feature or complication has a purpose. It adds value or convenience to my life.
The chronograph (stopwatch) complication does not. If I am ever somewhere that I need a stopwatch, I will use my phone.
AHHH! You said your phone!
Yes. Society already forces me to carry it around and it has a stopwatch. The stopwatch on my phone adds no extra weight or bulk. A chronograph complication on a watch adds both.
In my opinion, a chronograph is total vanity and impractical in 2024. No thanks!
Nit-Picky Reasons
There are a few more reasons why I wouldn't buy this. None of these are total deal-breakers. But added up, it's a no for me, dawg.
The crystal (on the black Moonwatch) is hesalite (acrylic). Sure, there are good reasons for this. It's what was used during the period of moon exploration. It also has some positives. I'm not here to argue that. I'm here to say that for this price, I want a sapphire crystal. (Some models have it)
It's a manual-winding watch. Yes, I know that's how it goes for these. It's just another thing to remember to do every two days. It's not a total deal-breaker, but added with other things, it's a no.
It's a big(ish) watch. With a case diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of 13.2 mm, it's a statement piece. I have a 7-inch wrist and am almost always in long sleeves. This thing gets in the way. I need something that can slide under my sleeve easily and doesn't draw (too much) attention.
Some Good Things
If you're into chronographs, the Moonwatch is still a fantastic watch. Just because this watch is not for me, it might be for you!
Here are a few selling points as to why:
Master Chronometer Certified
Anti Magnetic (greater than 15,000 gauss)
Clear Caseback (on some models)
50-hour power reserve
Again, this is a spectacular and iconic watch. With my lifestyle and for $7,000, I'll buy an Aqua Terra instead.
