THE BIG HAND
The 5 Best Starter Watches
Since starting this newsletter, people often ask me, "What is the best 'starter-watch?'"
It's usually from someone who wears a smartwatch and wants to test the waters. They want to see if an analog watch is something they'll actually wear. Spoiler alert, many people end up switching to an analog watch. But I digress.
They're looking for something simple and usually budget-friendly. So to make it easy for everyone, let's do it.
Here are 5 watches that I would personally own if I wanted to start my collection and find out if an analog watch was right for me.
(Trying something new, my reviews are included in the hyperlinked item box. I think it looks good and is an efficient use of space. Thoughts? LMK)
(bc many of you love Fossil watches, and that’s awesome)

3 Mistakes to Avoid When Starting Your Collection
Collecting watches is fun. But when you’re starting out, it’s easy to make mistakes. I’m here to help you avoid that!
Don’t be like 👆️
Buying without trying
Watch pics looks great on the internet. That’s the point of the internet, to make things look good (ex. Instagram). But a good-looking watch doesn’t mean it looks or feels good on your wrist. Try a watch on before buying it!
Overlooking Budget
Do not finance your fun, for watches or anything in life. I love watches (obviously) but would never put myself or family into debt for one. Set a goal, save your money and then walk into the store and pay for it in full when you’re ready. It’s responsible and feels damn good.
Focusing on Quantity Over Quality
Don’t get more watches than you will actually wear. I’d prefer to have fewer, high-quality watches. But that’s just me. Make your own choice but wear your watches! Don’t buy watches you won’t wear. Collect whatever you will wear!
Following Trends Blindly
Don’t browse the socials and buy whatever an influencer tells you to buy. (I am not an influencer, so listen to me. 😂) Each watch purchase should be a deliberate decision. If you’re not sure whether to buy a certain watch, sleep on it and make a decision after you’ve had time to think about it.
Ignoring Maintenance
Your watch will cost you money to maintain. For quartz watches, you will have to replace the battery (fairly cheap). For more expensive watches, you’ll have to pay for periodic servicing. Factor maintenance into your purchase decision!
