BIG-BONED WATCHES

Andre Braugher King GIF by NBC
Welcome to the Thicc Bois Club

Today, we celebrate the bold, the bulky, and the unapologetically thick watches that adorn the wrists of the daring and the adventurous. In a world where sleek and slim timepieces often steal the spotlight, it’s time to give a standing ovation (and perhaps a wrist workout) to the horological heavyweights.

Forget about slipping your watch discreetly under your cuff—these thicc bois demand attention, respect, and a bit of extra wrist strength. They’re the watches that make you feel like you’re carrying a piece of machinery on your arm, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to feel like a stylish cyborg every now and then?

So, grab a protein shake, flex those forearms, and join us as we explore the audaciously oversized realm of horological thickness.

So Let’s do the thing.

Tudor
Black Bay P01

14.4 mm thick

I almost bought this watch. Seriously. Stainless steel bezel, leather strap. It looks like the ultimate tool watch. But then I began reading reviews. This watch is over 14 mm thick! For comparison, that’s as thick as 100 sheets of paper. On your wrist! (It’s also 1/100 the size of Danny DeVito)

I wear long sleeves for a living, and that thickness was seriously concerning. I found a discounted deal on a second-hand website but when I went to Reddit, I changed my tune.

Posts on Reddit basically said that this watch is a tank. In fact, a heavy beast of a watch. Not only is it thick, but it’s heavy, coming in around 154 grams.

Other than its big bones, this is an incredible watch. It can likely survive anything you throw at it. Here are some specs:

With an MSRP of around $4,300, this is not a cheap watch. But this high price gets you a 5-year manufacturer guarantee. It shows how much Tudor stands by their product.

If you want a thick watch, have the cash, and want something to last you a lifetime (or longer) the Tudor Black Bay P01 might be for you.

Seiko
Turtle Prospex

13.42 mm

Seiko makes incredible watches. If you’re into watches, you’ve likely heard of the brand. For many, Seiko is often the first watch someone owns. The Seiko Turtle Prospex is a beast.

This thicc boi got its name due to its unique shape. Its case has a “cushion shape” and looks like (surprise) the shell of a turtle. For $495, you get a lot of bang for your buck. In addition to being big, you also get:

  • 200 meters of water resistance

  • ISO Standard dive watch (learn more here)

  • Screw-down crown

  • Rotating dive bezel

While this watch only has a 42-hour power reserve, for the most part, this watch gets glowing reviews. It’s a reliable tool watch that takes a beating and doesn’t break the bank. Take a look at what people are saying about it.

If you have big wrists (or are looking for your first thicc boi watch), take a look at this watch. You can never go wrong with a Seiko.

MINUS 8
Layer 2.0

14.4 mm

Ever hear of this company? I bet you haven’t.

I own this watch. And I love it. Here’s why…

Is it big? Yes, at 14.4 mm, this thing is a tank. It is so robust and hardy that you can put it on your wrist and not worry about it. It will survive.

Is it functional? Yes. It slides under my sleeves rather easily. It’s easy to read and displays the date (8 o’clock position). With 100 meters of water resistance, it easily survives rain, snow, or anything else.

How tough is it? It’s made of 316L stainless steel and has sapphire crystal (does not scratch easily).

This watch was on my wrist in interior Alaska last February. It easily survived three weeks of temperatures in the -40s° F. The coldest it got was -48° F. This thing kept going.

It didn’t leave my wrist for the entire three weeks. Minus 8 is a small watch company in California and I highly recommend that you check them out. (They aren’t paying me to say this!)

If you’re looking for a thick and rugged watch, definitely give this a shot at only $298.

Summary

Which watch are you going to check out? If you end up purchasing any, hit reply and let me know which one.

All three of these watches are great. I’d consider adding any of them to my collection. If you want to wear a watch and know that it’s there, a thicc boi watch is for you.

KNOWLEDGE

Watch Thickness: What Is Normal?

The answer you don’t want to hear…

It depends. Occasion for wear, style preference, and wrist size are factors.

This article on namokimods.com compares thin and thick watches, noting that thin watches (under 10mm) are sleek, comfortable, and ideal for formal wear, while thick watches (over 12mm) are bold, durable, and suited for casual or sporty looks.

It highlights the importance of choosing a watch based on wrist size, dress style, and occasion. Thin watches are great for slipping under cuffs and exuding refinement, whereas thick watches make a statement with their robust presence and extra features.

WATCH SIZES

Some say it matters, others say it doesn’t

Different types of watches tend to come in similar sizes. For example, historically, dress watches have been the smallest watch type. While these measurements aren’t always the case, here are some typical sizes you may see for various watch types.

Dress Watches
  • Normal Case Size: 34-40 mm

  • Normal Thickness: 6-10 mm

  • Occasions: Formal events, business meetings, and black-tie affairs.

Why: Dress watches are designed to be elegant and understated. Smaller case sizes and thinner profiles ensure the watch looks refined and fits comfortably under a dress shirt cuff, making it perfect for formal occasions without drawing too much attention.

Sports and Dive Watches
  • Normal Case Size: 40-46 mm

  • Normal Thickness: 12-16 mm

  • Occasions: Athletic activities, outdoor adventures, and water sports.

Why: Sports and dive watches are built for visibility and durability. Larger case sizes ensure that the watch face is easy to read, especially under water or in active conditions. The added size and thickness also allow for features like rotating bezels and higher water resistance.

Chronographs and Complicated Watches
  • Normal Case Size: 39-46 mm

  • Normal Thickness: 10-13 mm

  • Occasions: Casual to semi-formal events, and any occasion where a statement piece is desired.

Why: Chronographs and watches with multiple complications often have larger case sizes and thicker profiles to accommodate the additional mechanical components. These watches are bold and intricate, appealing to those who appreciate detailed craftsmanship and complex functionality.
