Three Types of Watch Movements

Today, let's dive into the fascinating world of watch movements. If you're new to the game, understanding the different types of movements is like uncovering the secret sauce behind your favorite timepieces. It's what makes each watch tick in its own unique way, and trust me, it's pretty darn cool!

The internals of three types of movements

Quartz Movement

First off, quartz movements, the workhorses of timekeeping. These watches are powered by a battery, offering reliable accuracy and low maintenance. If you're always on the go and value practicality, a quartz watch might be your best bet. They're perfect for everyday wear and require minimal upkeep, making them ideal for busy lifestyles.

Mechanical Movement

Now, let's talk about mechanical movements, the classic choice for watch enthusiasts. These watches are manually wound, bringing a touch of tradition and craftsmanship to your wrist. If you appreciate the artistry behind watchmaking and enjoy the ritual of winding your timepiece, a mechanical watch is right up your alley. They offer a more intimate connection with your watch and are perfect for those who value heritage and tradition.

Automatic Movement

Last but not least, we have automatic movements, the best of both worlds. These watches harness the motion of your wrist to stay wound, eliminating the need for manual winding. If you lead an active lifestyle and want a watch that keeps up with your adventures without sacrificing style, an automatic watch is the way to go. With their blend of convenience and craftsmanship, automatic watches are perfect for the modern enthusiast who appreciates both form and function.

Brand of the Week

Nomadic Watches

A luxury dive watch, built in Belfast, Ireland. I stumbled across this micro-brand while searching the internet for a watch similar to a Rolex Explorer. My search brought me to Nomadic’s Turas 914.

“Turas” is the Irish word for journey, and that exactly what Nomadic brings to the table. The 914 represents the year 1914, the year that Ernest Shackleton set out on his expedition to explore Antarctica. The watch below is in the $1,200 USD range.

Nomadic prides itself on the rich history of Belfast and its ties to shipbuilding and industrial strength. In fact, it’s where the RMS Titanic was built and the famous ship’s first-class passenger tender, SS Nomadic is where this company got its name.

However, the name is not only representative of a ship.

Our brand name, Nomadic, has another meaning. To be nomadic - to move from place to place - is symbolic of our desire to make continual progress as a company, and as purpose led individuals

The company takes great pride in their watches being made in Belfast and the Turas 914 is on my list of watches to buy in the near future.
